FDA official to address tomato congress
Nega Beru, director of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Office of Food Safety, will address tomato industry professionals at the International Tomato Congress in Mexico July 23-25, according to a news release.

Beru will discuss the recent outbreak of Salmonella Saintpaul in the U.S. and the impact it has had on tomato growers in the U.S. and Mexico as well as the FDA’s role in the crisis.

The FDA’s decision to advise consumers not to eat certain types of tomatoes following the outbreak “has had a devastating effect on the entire tomato industry, particularly affecting growers in Mexico,” the release said. Beru will address the reasons behind the FDA’s actions.

The International Tomato Congress also will offer growers and marketers three days of conferences on tomato production and marketing practices. More than 100 industry suppliers will show the latest products and services for tomato operations.
